Emergency Response - Fire

Prevention
  • Prepare a fire evacuation plan
  • Install smoke alarms, test them and replace batteries regularly
  • If possible install at least two fire extinguishers and place strategically in your house close to, but not next to potential fire source points, regularly re-read directions for useeep a Fire Blanket in your kitchen and know how to use it
  • Arrange the safe storage of matches and flammable substances
  • Prepare a Grab Bag

Fire Situation

  • Scream FIRE to all people in the building - Put plan into action immediately
  • Check for survival and injury of family members
  • In case of fire - ONLY FIGHT FIRE IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO
  • Take only Grab Bag, wallet, keys and mobile phone - only if you can safely
  • Stay low to the floor and get out - close doors behind you
  • Get out and once outside, do not go back in
  • Call 000 from a phone outside the house, eg mobile or neighbour
  • Turn off gas and electricity ONLY if safely possible externally
  • Account for all people in house
  • If anyone is missing, tell the fire service.
  • Assess damage and site safety
  • Isolate affected area if possible
  • Depending on scale of damage, call 1300 SCOTIA if necessary
