A violent storm can happen at any time with very little warning. But there are some
simple steps you can take to reduce potential damage to your home and help keep
your family safe.
Most storm damage comes from heavy rain, high winds, fallen trees, lightning and
hail that occur during storms for short periods and can cause substantial damage to
your home, however some of this can be minimised or prevented.
Storm Damage Prevention:
- Clean gutters and down pipes and check inside the roof for leaks.
- Sweep debris away from storm water drains and unblock any so that storm
water can flow away freely.
- Trim tree branches near the house (permits may be required)
- Tidy up any loose objects that could blow around.
- Invest in electrical surge protection for your sensitive appliances
Storm Damage Situation:
- If necessary shelter in the strongest part of your home, like the bathroom, cellar,
hallway or built-in wardrobe.
- If necessary, cover yourself with a mattress, blanket, doona or tarp.
- Stay clear of windows and skylights. Close curtains and blinds to help protect
against flying glass.
- Don't use the phone if there's lightning about.
- Turn computers and other electrical sensitive appliances off and unplug to
reduce surge damage
- Listen to a portable radio for weather updates.
- Where you have time, put your ‘Do & Take List’ plan into effect for other
important items and family treasures
- Put the personal safety of yourself and your family before your house and
possessions
- Tell Police or Emergency Services if attending your area, plus your family and
neighbours if you evacuate and where you are going
- Depending on scale of damage, call 1300 SCOTIA if necessary
