History & Milestones

Our journey spans over three decades of dedicated service to the strata industry.

1992

Humble Beginnings in St Kilda

Founded by brothers Billy and George McLaughlin, The Scotia Group began as a home-based operation with two-way radios and payphones. We focused on property maintenance, handyman repairs, window replacements, and block painting. Our growth came entirely from word-of-mouth recommendations.
1994-2005

Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick

We established our first commercial premises in the Elsternwick strip shopping precinct, complete with a workshop yard at the rear.
2005-2007

Moorabbin Expansion

Relocated from Elsternwick to Moorabbin and created Scotia Glass Pty Ltd to complement sash window manufacturing, significantly expanding our strata repair services.
2007-2011

Growth and Innovation

The business moved to a larger Moorabbin site and established Scotia Hire Pty Ltd, an elevated work platform and boom lift hire company. We experienced significant growth driven by increased demand and the beginning of weather-related insurance work. Most importantly, we introduced and established our after-hours service for our growing strata clientele.
2011-2013

Carrum Downs Headquarters

We relocated our office to Carrum Downs to accommodate our expanding administration team of customer service, accounts, and repair coordinators.
2014

Rapid Growth Phase

Experienced significant business growth fuelled by insurance repairs following severe weather events across the region.
2015

Strategic Refocus

Scotia Hire Pty Ltd was sold to a large hire company, and we integrated Scotia Glass Pty Ltd with Scotia Property Maintenance Pty Ltd to slimline our operations.
2016

Major Storm Response

Major storm activity boosted our insurance work, with insurance repairs comprising two-thirds of our operations, demonstrating our capability in crisis response.
March 2020

New Headquarters and Restoration Division

Relocated to our current headquarters just before COVID-19 lockdowns began. We launched our restoration business and became industry leaders in interpreting government construction guidelines, pausing non-critical works to protect community safety.
2020-2021

Resilience Through Crisis

Successfully navigated multiple lockdowns, a two-week construction shutdown, an earthquake, and major storms. We treated each reopening as a “mini weather event” to expedite works and support our clients.
2022

Large-Scale Project Delivery

Successfully delivered major projects, VMIA works, cladding works, and CSV projects, demonstrating our ability to scale operations whilst maintaining quality standards.
2024

Strategic Diversification

With stable weather conditions in Victoria, we refocused on repairs, maintenance, defects, and large-scale projects. We continue to serve strata clients and insurance works to stay true to our hands-on, family-owned approach.
